This was a musical version of Emily Bronte’s novel. The story covers a period of time from about 1800 to 1835. We wanted to create a very simple look capture a sense of the spirit of the period, but on a very tight budget did not want to do true period clothes and full costume changes. I focused my research on from around 1800 – 1813, which (in this version) was when most of the story takes place. For the women, we used simple modern tops and shirts as a foundation for the bodice, and built simple period skirts. For the men, we used modern clothes and altered the shape of the pants and cut into the jackets to adjust the silhouette. We kept the palette tight and simple, using almost all white for the women and a darker range for the men. It was a fun process, and it was satisfying to come up with a somewhat period look using modern clothes and a tiny budget! |
