In this production of William Inge's classic play, I attempted to strip away everything but the elements that felt essential for this particular approach. The space was defined by gauze walls and portals, framing the stairs. There was no furniture of any kind in the main playing area, with a few small pieces and a piano hidden behind the layers of gauze. The effect I was after was the feeling of having a word or a memory on the tip of your tongue; you know it is there, but you can't quite grasp it. The idea underscored the memory aspects of the play - the only tangible objects were the ones handled by the actors, as if brought into focus by the scene. Everything else was hazy, peripheral and elusive. |
